My life is a string of impulsive decisions. Bad ones. The worst? Taking off with the wrong guy after high school. He wrapped his hands around my throat and nearly stole my voice for good.

“I’ll protect your secrets,” the emotionally scarred, spiritual ex-Marine promises during the long, dark night we stay up talking after I get stranded. “Teach you to trust again. If you’ll let me.”

And that’s a problem, because I’m beyond tempted to do just that.
